Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, therefore it is stored in the liver and released in small doses when needed. For this reason, unlike vitamin C, it is not necessary to take it every day.
Vitamin D plays a very important role in immune defense. It is essential for the functioning of T lymphocytes, cells that fight on the front line of immune defense. In fact, they cannot reproduce or block pathogens without a sufficient amount of vitamin D.
It also plays a key role in bone health, specifically in preventing osteoporosis in the elderly and rickets in children.
Vitamin D is also called the sunshine vitamin because it needs sunlight to be activated. Studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is quite common in the Italian population, and one of the causes is attributed to the fact that many people spend much of their day in places with poor natural lighting.
